Plaid Short Pants 2025

This is a much more challenging project than the ones before, especially if you choose to use a plaid and want to have it match up. I'm not going to go over pattern matching because I myself have a hard time with it and don't feel like I have all the technical skills to teach anyone about it. What I do is just try to cut the exact mirror copy of everything on one side for the other, especially along the seams. When it comes to sewing, you might find that you'll have to finagle the fabric in order to get the pattern to match. Hopefully this doesn't occur and if it does I hope it works in your favor.

Step One is to take your fabric and fold it over for a leg. Make the distance from the selvedge to the fold an inch or so more than half the thigh measurement. Maybe more, maybe less. If you're cautious, start big and work back. Then measure down the selvedge how long you will want the out seam of the shorts to be.

The next step will be cutting the legs and I did mine in a style that leaves a lot of room in the butt and crotch. Not great for this fabric and my design path so I had to do a lot of adjusting after the garment was made. The general concept is to cut your two front pieces with the selvedge along the outside and your back pieces so they line up along the butt seam.

The real reason for the post today is to the the pocket making. I just made the pant legs and went with my gut on the best pocket method. I don't know what this is called but let's just call it a tucked pocket. Following the images below sets out a really clear idea of shape/sewing placement/sewing order so if anything I hope you can use these to install pockets in your projects!
